После здоровой критики и не очень :smt006 , продолжим.

Dimensions
Weight: 650 kilo / 1,433 lbs

Alfa Romeo had made a successful return to motorsport with the TZ (Tubular chassis and Zagato body) model, and in 1964 explored the opportunity to make a road going version of the lightweight racer. Although the Zagato version was highly competitive, it was also very expensive, so Alfa Romeo offered a TZ chassis to both Bertone and Pininfarina to turn into a road car. At Bertone the project was headed by a young Giorgietto Giugiaro, who had penned the Giulia Sprint body for Alfa Romeo a year earlier.

The Alfa Romeo Bertone Canguro made its inaugural debut in October of 1964 at the Paris Motor Show. Though there was much interest in the car, the company decided not to put it into production. Later, the only prototype constructed was damaged by a journalist. The vehicle remained in pieces for nearly three decades before a Japanese collector/enthusiast had the car restored in the early seventies.

Constructed in 1931, this 6C 1750 Gran Sport was clothed by Zagato with the familiar roadster bodywork for its first, Turin-based owner. In 1938, the six cylinder Alfa Romeo was acquired by Giuseppe Aprile from Savona. By this time the Zagato body had been badly damaged but Aprile, fortunately, also owned his own 'Carrozzeria'. Instead of repairing the damaged coachwork, he decided to fit a brand new and more modern body.

Aprile called in the services of Count Revelli de Beaumont to pen the new lines. The noted designer created a stunningly aerodynamic shape that bore some resemblance to the contemporary Alfa Romeo Grand Prix and sports racers. Soon after the work was completed, Aprile sold the car to a local enthusiast. He carefully hid the car during the War and owned it until 1956. The fourth owner cherished the unique machine and held on to it for over five decades during which it was only very rarely seen.

An Italian collector of one-off coach-built machinery, the current custodian eventually acquired the car in 2008. He has since had the car meticulously restored before bringing it to the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance; the Alfa Romeo's first ever journey abroad. The Aprile Spider Corsa placed second in class, beaten only by another one-off 6C 1750 Gran Sport. It has since been a regular entrant at events around the world with considerable success, most notably at the 2014 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, where the Aprile Spider walked away with five awards including the prestigious Coppa d'Oro for 'Best of Show by Public Referendum'.

Originally built as one of the 'Periscopica' Spiders, this 33 was equipped with a new, longer tail ahead of the road rally held around Mugello. The result of continuous development the revised body earned a new name; the 'Mugello' Spider. This style was not used on subsequent versions, so it probably was not a success. Still with its unique body, the car was displayed for many years in Peter Kaus' Rosso Bianco museum. After the entire collection changed hands in 2006, it was briefly shown in the old Louwman Collection museum.

The long tail has been tested on several cars (750.33.003, 750.33.005 ecc.) The new, lightweight version for Group 7 was built and tested in 1967, over 750.33.006 chassis with same long tail. The car was destroyed in Jean Rolland's fatal accident during testing at Montlhery 17 Septembre 1967. It had different shape of front lights, but the rest was same as the car shown above. The engine power was declared 273bhp at 9600rpm.

Despite the obvious, AR does not stand for Alfa Romeo, but rather Autovettura da Ricognizione, or reconnaissance vehicle. Based on a formula devised by Italy’s Ministry of Defense, Alfa Romeo took to the challenge to design a vehicle that could overcome all obstacles. Somewhat irreverently, it was also called the Alfa Matta, which translates to Mad Alfa, the forebear of the modern sport utility vehicle. Alfa delivered 2,000 to the Italian government, along with another 50 for civilian use. It was produced from 1952 to 1954, when it became known as the AR52.

Specifications issued by the Italian military for a reconnaissance vehicle referenced the ubiquitous Willys Jeep, of which there were many in Italy following World War II. The first step of Alfa’s design team, headed by Giuseppe Busso, was to acquire a Land Rover, a vehicle considered superior by the design chief in comparison to the American Jeep. By April of 1951, a prototype based on the Land Rover, with a new front end and a 65-horsepower, 1,900-cubic centimetre twin-cam engine, took to the road, driven by Consalvo Sanesi.

Only a few days later, the army’s representative, Colonel Garbani, identified a number of problems to be addressed. A brand new prototype appeared on 5 October. Fitted with independent front suspension and a rigid rear axle, four-wheel drum brakes, and a torpedo-shaped body that could be covered with a canvas top for all-weather protection, it weighed just 1,250 kilograms. This time, Colonel Garbani reported favorable results, and the vehicle was put in production. Engineer Antonio Alessio, then managing director of Alfa, saw the vehicle in action, and it is he who is credited with nicknaming it the “Matta.”

Ultimately, the Ministry’s order went to Fiat. Most of the AR51s produced went to Italy’s Carabinieri, army, and police force before production ceased. Interestingly, the vehicle was entered in the 1952 Mille Miglia in the Military Vehicle category, beating the similar Fiat Campagnolas by 42 minutes. Later, the off-roaders appeared in the Monte Grosso, Artico Lualdi, Fratellanza, Peace, and the Vaticano–Peking raids, as well as the Bonzi Expedition to Indonesia.

This spartan Alfa Romeo reconnaissance vehicle is in off-road-ready condition and willing to take on any terrain one could find themselves crossing. In the unlikely event one should get stuck in a rut, the rear-mounted spade and pickaxe may very well come in handy.

A unique alternative to the Willys Jeep and Fiat Campagnola, this Alfa Matta will be a sure-fire hit on the trails.
